• What is MUN? •

A Model United Nations is a conference which simulates the functioning of real world UN bodies and subsidiaries. At university level, this means conferences that can span up to a week with committees debating and working to resolve a range of issues relating to diplomacy, security, economics, health, human rights, and more.

Delegates generally each represent a country, and must advocate for that country’s position in committee deliberations in order to secure an outcome that is agreeable to their country. In the course of discussions, you will try to direct discourse towards what matters most to your country, sideline those issues which do not, and enhance your country’s position and prestige.

It doesn’t take a certain kind of person to do a MUN. Delegates will have a wide range of backgrounds; some may be from politics and international relations, but also from biochemistry, law, education, mathematics and more. Delegates can walk into committee with nothing but a fuzzy idea of their country’s position and an enthusiasm for collaboration, and walk away with strengthened skills, expanded knowledge and new friends (and maybe a new nemesis).

• About the United Nations Society •

United Nations Society (UNS) is a student organisation with the University of Newcastle created in year 2015. We regularly run MUNs at the University of Newcastle, organise lectures and workshops, provide students with opportunity to volunteer for UN, so keep an eye on the UNS Facebook page and make sure you’re signed up to UNS as a member to get our emails.  We’re a platform for students at UON to connect with others who are passionate about UN and help student to contribute to UN goals.
